Prior to this lesson, I had a very different concept of sex in religious studies and thought it only related to the boundaries prescribed by religion. For example, the Abrahamic faiths prohibit sexual acts prior to marriage and homosexual acts are also seen as sinful. Most scholars in these religion agree upon this premise, but there are certain scholars who see how it is allowed through different textual interpretations. But sex, like everything else in religious studies, is open to interpretation and has a different meaning to each individual, in terms of acts, sexuality, etc.. The differences in opinion brings me back to the information obtained in a prior lesson about interpreting sacred texts. How is it that total opposites can be obtained from one scripture. As in, how open to interpretation are religious scriptures that one individual can get one concept from it and the other an entirely different one. This also effects how countries are ran and what religious governments allow. There are many stories of individuals who were exiled or put on death row for being caught doing homosexual acts, while others ran away from the country and were able to describe the harsh punishment that they endured.
