Prior to this lesson, I understood that the KKK was an organization which set out to harm certain communities, but I did not know their affiliation with Protestant Christianity. I believe I was not aware of this primarily due to the emphasis of KKK hating Blacks, so much so that their hatred of Jews was never emphasized. Learning this was new, but throughout history, other organizations and people have used religious affiliation to push their own political agendas. It is common knowledge that Hitler was anti-Semitic. but I was unaware of KKK’s anti-Semitism prior to this lesson. Throughout history, people, including Hitler, have used religion as a way to push their mission and objective. Hitler believed that he was amongst the chosen and, in Europe at the time, anti-Semitism was starting to pick up a lot of steam, and he was able to use this to push his own narrative of Judaism and the Jews. Even today, there are many Christians which hate Jews because they believe that the Jews were responsible for Jesus’s death. Anti-Semitic behavior is still prevalent throughout the world particularly in countries near the Middle East. Many of these people have deep psychological issues and have “saved sect syndrome”, in where they believe they are the righteous and they are destined for Paradise and that they are doing what God has “ordained” them to do.
