Before this lesson, I would have thought innovation was referring to innovation within religion. As in, things were added to the religion that were not there previously. Such as changing of scripture, new forms of prayer etc.. After this lesson though, I learned that new religions have been invented rather recently. Jediism, for example, is a religion which follows the Jedi code, from the Star Wars series. They see “The Force” as a main tenant of the religion. This was quite interesting to me, since typically most religions are old and usually thousands of years old. These newly invented religions, however, face a lot of scrutiny and face difficulty in being recognized by bureaucracies and gaining serious mainstream attention. Jediism, specifically, is regarded as a joke to many and not taken seriously, despite them having an actual following. It gives us something to think about, however. Like, if people of today’s society have issues accepting religion that was innovated today, then the societies from thousands of years ago likely had issues accepting the religions invented in their time. Perhaps acceptance of these religions will get easier through time, as they did with older religions.
