Prior to this lesson, I thought that the term gender was binary. Biologically speaking, a person can only be born a man or a woman, with XY or XX chromosomes. But I learned that the term “gender” entails more than that. Gender is part of your identity and people identify differently. As per this lesson: gender has a range of masculinity and femininity, and people can identify as who they feel they are or are meant to be. Gender is not binary and has a social implication to it. People involved in religious studies, study the role of gender in religion and how people interact with it. Gender greatly impacts how religion is perceived and varies for each gender. Some religions are patriarchal, while others are not. In some religions, women’s physique is hidden to avoid objectification, and in others they are able to dress however they desire. For certain people who are on different parts of the gender spectrum, the way the interpret religion will be different. Some followers of religion forbid homosexual acts, and some followers interpret religious texts to allow it.
